The Baca County Extension office provides assistance and programs for citizens in five main areas: Agriculture, Horticulture, Family and Consumer Science, Natural Resources and 4-H Youth Programs.

Leader: Beki Schroder 523-4479. Meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Vilas Community Building.

The Vilas Livestock 4-H Club originated in 1949 where Jane Thompson, Alice Konkel and Horace Ward served as founding leaders. In 1973, Dennis Thompson took over the reins as leader and was later joined by his new bride, Gayla in 1976. Dennis and Gayla retired in 2008 and Beki Schroder took over as organizational leader, and she is still serving in that capacity. Project leaders for the club include: Alanda Babb, Selena Arana and Ryne Schroder, we currently have 26 members.

The Vilas Livestock 4-H Club holds great pride in giving back to the community. The club participates in many community service projects such as: Operation Christmas Child, Pound Out Hunger Food Drive, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, delivering May Day baskets to the elderly of the Vilas community, Turk’s Pond Clean-Up, Planting shade and windbreak trees for the Vilas Recreation Building and Vilas City Park, Planting shrubs and windbreak trees for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, Planting windbreak trees for area farmers, Painted the Walsh American Legion building and mowed weeds, placed flags at Veterans graves at the Vilas and Springfield cemeteries, assisted with the Memorial Day celebration, donated funds to kickoff animal shelter in Springfield, hosted annual dinners for the Colorado Wheat Growers’ Association, Peoples Credit Union, Baca County Conservation District and the Baca County Farm Bureau.

Our members have participated in the many leadership activities sponsored by the 4-H program such as: District Retreat, Night Owl, Cabellos & Clovers Camp, Youthfest, Colorado 4-H Conference, National Western Stock Show Catch-A-Calf program, Citizenship Washington Focus, Vanguard Leadership Academy and National 4-H Conference.
